Random moments from WHU games that have stuck in your head

Mid 90s vs Wimbledon, the first game i can remember seeing on a Thursday night.
Vinnie Jones got the usual pelters all through the game, particularly vehement due to the start of his Wales career.
There was a moment in the second half where the ball had gone out for a throw and an injury caused a delay. Vinnie was waiting to take the throw and copping it from the chicken run, as the injury delay continued, Vinnie went and pushed a photographer off his seat and promptly assumed the berth, cue a standing ovation from the chicken run.
Anyone else recall this?
Christ knows why, but this image pops into my head on a weekly basis.

Well back into the days when everyone used to play at 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoons, they had a load of slots coded by letters, giving the half-time scores in the other matches.

Can't remember which year it was, but they put up the wrong score for ManU vs Ipswich, 6-0, when it actually was a low-scoring match.

Ironically, long after the slots had gone, ManU really did slaughter Ipswich.

The spurs game where the fan ran on the pitch to take the free kick in one momentum

When it was taken our players in the wall followed the ball to see if Adrian saved it or not
Even the judge commented that he took it better than the player

Around '96 playing Liverpool at home (can't remember the score) in the West Upper. Three of us had STs on the halfway line above the steps.
'Three Lion's' is top of the charts and Ian Broudie who wrote it, is making his way through the crowd at halftime to go downstairs, smiling, greeting everyone and giving it a tad large. My mate Peter, who is quite scary to look at, calls 'Ian, Ian' (Broudie looks up at him, big smile and giving the thumbs up) fuck off you Scouse CUNT!!!' Never seen someone change colour so quickly as Broudie, didn't come back that way. Perhaps you had to be there, but we couldn't stop laughing the rest of the match!

There have been some great moments over the years:

Bobby in goal against Stoke
Geoff Hurst's 6 against Sunderland
Graham Paddon's thunderbolt against Den Haag?

But the funniest moment I recall was in a Zenith Data Systems cup tie against Chelsea. David Speedie ( then with Chelsea ) was looking to receive the ball and in nipped Mark Ward and challenged him by kneeing him full on in the bollox and calmly running away with the ball at speed. It was done so quickly the ref missed it but as it was a lowly cup game there were less than 10000 there and you could hear Speedie's high pitched scream all around UP followed by guffaws of laughter.

Happy days. We lost the game mind. :-)

Five or six years ago, Chelsea at home under the lights, despite losing 1-0, the crowd were in good spirits throughout. In response to a chelsea chant of "One Kurt Zouma", the whole ground went up in a chorus of "they won't let you on the train".

Two of my favourite moments involved Adrian.

Firstly his solo goal in Nobes testimonial. Probably the best natured thing I have ever seen on a football pitch.

Secondly pulling his gloves off as he was about to take that penalty. Probably the best piece of psyching out a goalkeeper I have ever seen.

I wasn't at a game, I was in a pub but I have never forgotten it. I was at a Butlins Adult Only Weekend years ago. If a stereotypical thought about such weekends has popped into your head- you are probably right. We were playing Pompey in the Premier League game which gives you some idea of how long ago it was.

We were in one of the many bars watching Soccer Saturday and with the amount of people there, lots of teams represented. In our group alone there was West Ham, Liverpool, Man United, Brentford, Chelsea and Forest. So when goals went in there were the usual cheers or groans dependent on your allegiance or accumulator.

For a reason unbeknown to me, it was decided that when the next random goal goes in, we should all go mad. Then someone very random in Scotland scored, it may have been Cowdenbeath, as it flashed up we started cheering and jumping around. Most people realised what we were doing and joined in.

That was about as exciting as it got for the football, we drew 0-0.

Martin Allen, comes on as sub at half time v Sheffield Wednesday at home, demolishes Carlton Palmer immediately play commences

Palmer stretchered off. Taken to hospital but curiously manages to play the following weekend. It was a long time coming, Palmer had been running riot doing exactly the same type of tackle throughout the first half

Also Moncur think he got a red after coming on in 5 mins as one of our players was hacked down and nothing was done he comes on and goes straight through the player.

Another Chelsea incident this time involving (I think) Speedie and Wardie circa 85/86(?)

Foul by a West Ham player and the Chelsea player fouled is getting treatment, meanwhile Wardie had hold of the ball and Speedie decided
he wanted to ball there and then to prepare for the free kick. Wardie takes umbrage to Speedies telling him to give him the ball and after a few niggly request Wardie decides ok you want the ball? I'll give you the fucking ball and smacks it full pelt into Speedies bollocks and Speedies face was like one of those robbers in Home Alone. Meanwhile the whole Chicken Run is in a fit of laughter at Speedie but Wardie.......I don't think he raised even a slight smile.

Being sat on top of my mums and dad's car having the two white crossed Hammers painted on my face for the home game vs Cambridge Utd which got us promoted. (my first ever game) then having a photo in front of the goal when everyone was on the pitch.


Blackburn away a few years ago in the cup. Rovers fans were giving it to us as Payet stepped up for the free kick. I made eye contact with 1 of the rovers fans, I didn't watch the free kick itself I just told him with two fingers what was going to happen. He laughed gave the wanker sign, looked away, ball flew in and he looked back at us with a clap and a laugh.

Cardiff for the Preston play off, staying in a hotel on the riverbank that insisted on a 2-night booking so we made a weekend of it with three games across the weekend, six sets of fans doing the same thing. It felt, though, that collectively West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday had taken over Cardiff. Everyone was on the streets, just diving into places to get a drink, and it became a night of just constant chants against the Wednesday fans (all very friendly).

Being born in 86, and having missed the real European days, I loved those three consecutive weekends in Cardiff. I’d never felt part of the family more. Unbelievable togetherness.

I vividly remember Mad Dogs antics at the Den that day, the man is a lunatic but what a character.

During the 1998 World Cup my oldest Daughter was 5 at the time and fell in love football and Michael Owen was her hero. The following season was her first game at Upton Park, yep you guessed it against Liverpool. When Owens name was announced she stood on her seat and started cheering, I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. Fortunately the people around me in the BMU saw the funny side of it and pissed themselves laughing.

Early 90's up at Filbert Street I had 2 seat tickets for me and a mate unfortunately he couldn't make it so the future Mrs Lato said "I'll go." She then watched all the shenanigans on the terraces between our lot and theirs for the whole 90 minutes. Then had the cheek to ask at the end did we win?

Game at Newcastle, about 1993 or 4. They score, we sing '2-1 to the Cockney boys". They score again, we sing '3-2 to the Cockney boys". At the end of the game we're still singing "5-4 to the Cockney boys".



I remember the 98/99 (?) season where we lost to Everton 6-0. Every time they scored, within a minute or two, we would celebrate as if we'd scored. Cue at the end of the match chants of "7-6 to the cockney boys!"

Everton clapped us out of Goodison after that one.

The game was West Ham at home to Chelsea. I can't date it specifically. But Bobby Moore was in his prime and Peter Osgood was just breaking into the England side. I was under the West Stand near the front at pitch level.

Osgood was putting in a few, shall we say enthusiastic tackles and the crowd were giving him plenty. Chelsea was attacking the Southbank and Osgood received the ball wide out on the touchline just about level to where I was standing. He had his back to our goal. Moore had anticipated the move and was there as the ball arrived. He effortlessly went through the back Osgood ( you could in those days) won the ball and left Osgood in a heap and played a pass to set up our attack. The aggrieved Osgood jumped up aggressively but as he did Moore just patted him on the arse. Osgood realising it was Moore shrunk back and looked like a little naughty boy who had been chastised.

Can't remember the result. Nor can I remember Osgood putting himself about after that.
